Home and Real Estate Weekly: five secret weapons for do-it-yourself projects

Is there a house maintenance project that has long been on your to-do list because you're afraid of traveling to the hardware or craft store? There are some projects you can deal with objects that are almost certainly already in your home.

1. Vinegar: there is probably a pitcher of vinegar in your pantry right now. You can immerse the objects in the vinegar to remove mineral deposits (like in a clogged shower) and you can boil the vinegar in the microwave to remove odors and make it easier to clean.

2. Cola: a can of Coca Cola or Pepsi can be used to clean many surfaces, including glass windows, porcelain toilets or chrome accessories. Just do some research before using it on metal surfaces, as it can be corrosive.

3. Sodium bicarbonate: this article may be more useful for applications other than cooking. A baking soda paste is ideal for cleaning bathrooms and kitchens. Sodium bicarbonate can also be used to absorb odors.

4. Butter knife: screwdrivers are easy to lose. If you can not find a screwdriver when you need it, a butter knife – preferably an older one that you no longer need for table setting – is quite effective for both the Phillips and the flat head screws .

5. Toothpaste: is it an unsightly scratch on your car or motorcycle? The grinding of toothpastes with calibration control is an effective solution for removing scratches. Clean the scratch, apply a bit of toothpaste, let it rest for a few minutes, then polish it with a paper towel.
