How to help the people affected by Hurricane Florence – History

– Florence – which started out as a powerful category 4 hurricane and has since been downgraded in a tropical storm – continues to devastate communities, threatening to dump additional 15 inches of rain on the Carolinas.

If you're trying to make a difference, here's how you can help those affected by the storm.

FEMA argues that cash donations provide maximum flexibility for charitable and non-profit organizations to meet urgent needs. People are urged to not donate unsolicited goods such as used clothing, miscellaneous household items, medicines or perishable foodstuffs at this time to avoid removing valuable voluntary labor, transportation and warehouse space.

Charity Navigator has compiled a list of high-level organizations planning to respond to Tropical Storm Florence in the aftermath. These organizations will provide assistance to communities affected by the storm.

General help and rescue

Financial aid for families

Relief from food and hunger

Accommodation and shelter

Animal care

Those interested in donating can also support the official GoFundMe Hurricane Florence Relief fund here. GoFundMe has also edited a hub that includes verified campaigns and individual fundraisers for victims.

FEMA urges those who wish to volunteer not to self-deploy, as this could have a negative impact on first responders and their missions. Potential volunteers are asked to register with a voluntary or charitable organization. FEMA also notes that there will be voluntary needs for many months after the disaster, so those wishing to help should register now.
