Update to the latest version of Skype

Why should I update to the latest version of Skype?
Skype is always making improvements, such as better quality, better reliability and greater security. Because we want everyone to experience the best that Skype has to offer, we are withdrawing previous versions.

Do I have to update at the latest version?
Yes. Support for Skype version 7 and later will end on November 1, 2018 on desktop devices and November 15, 2018 on mobile devices and tablets. Once the support is complete, we will begin to request updates to the latest version.

How can I view the history of the previous chat after the update?
For Mac, Windows 7 and laterWhen you update the Skype app on your device, you will be able to access the chat history of the last year. The oldest one-year history is stored only locally on your computer and is not backed up to the cloud. We recommend that you export the history file from Skype and save it to your preferred storage location.

To find the history file:

For Android and iOSWhen you update the Skype app on your device, you will be able to access the chat history of the last year. The previous chat history may not be available after the update.

If I have Skype on Windows XP or Vista, how can I keep the chat history?
You can export a copy of the chat history:

  1. To select Tools > Options.

You can use the CSV file with any spreadsheet program, such as Microsoft Excel. Please note that some contents, such as multimedia files, are not exported; Shared URLs and similar content are exported to XML tags; some messages may be split into separate lines due to formatting issues.

Why are my contacts, history and credits completely missing after the update?
Make sure you have logged in to the latest version of Skype with the same Skype credentials you used on an earlier version for Skype.

What do I need to run Skype?
